In 1978 the Environmental Protection Agency banned the use of lead paint in residential painting after finding that it caused developmental disorders, learning disabilities, and behavioral problems in children. However, lead paint can also cause lead poisoning in adults, with adverse reactions such as internal organ damage, seizures, anemia, brain, and nervous system impairments and, in high doses, death. For these reasons, it’s a great idea to make sure your home does not contain lead and, if it does, to have it removed.
How Lead Ingestion From Lead Paint Occurs
Lead ingestion occurs when aging paint peels, chips, and falls to the floor—where it can be easily ingested by children and animals—or onto other household surfaces, where anyone can inadvertently ingest it. Through repeated opening and closing, windows and doors with lead paint will emit fine dust particulates into the air, where they are unknowingly breathed in. Any of these modes of lead paint ingestion can lead to lead poisoning and sickness.
